Anodyne Therapy
Peripheral neuropathy robs people of a normal life. They complain about sleepless nights, burning pain and trouble simply walking. It is estimated 1 in 5 people will obtain peripheral neuropathy as they age. While the symptoms of peripheral neuropathy and its complications have been difficult or impossible to resolve, Hands-On Physical Therapy now provides a clinically proven program that can help reduce the pain associated with peripheral neuropathy and Hands-On Physical Therapy was the first clinic in New Jersey to provide this treatment! No one in the state has more experience with this program than Hands-On Physical Therapy!
What is Anodyne Therapy?
This technology was first developed on race horses for the Kentucky Derby and successfully healed injuries quicker. Anodyne therapy emits monochromatic infrared photo energy(MIRE) to substantially increase local circulation and temporarily reduce pain. Anodyne was designed to maximize the effectiveness of infrared photo energy using light emitting diodes(LEDs) placed in direct skin contact. It works on a gas molecule called Nitric Oxide in our systems that has been found to be inhibited in people with peripheral neuropathy. Anodyne therapy increases the uptake of Nitric Oxide which in turn dilates blood vessels to improve circulation and the transmission between nerves to decrease pain.
Will this program provide pain relief?
Pain is the first symptom to improve in this program, while functional improvements may take more physical therapy. One study examined 784 patients with chronic pain unresponsive to all other modalities and drugs. Nearly 89% of the patients had excellent to total pain relief within twelve 30-45 minute Anodyne Therapy sessions. A second study surveyed 252 patients with diabetes who had experienced chronic foot and leg pain. After receiving Anodyne therapy, 87% reported substantial reductions in their foot and leg pain.
What should you expect from this program?
Most patients say that Anodyne Therapy feels warm and soothing. Others say they feel some tingling and pulsing, which is normal as blood flow returns. Some patients respond very quickly in our comprehensive program, while others take longer based on their degree of impairment. Our clinic will work with you as long as you are willing to work on your functional limitations and are showing progress toward your goals.
Is it really possible for you to reduce falls and the fear of falling?
Several studies have also documented that this comprehensive program can improve balance, decrease falls and fear of falling. Falls are one the leading causes of injury in the elderly. Data shown to the American Physical Therapy Association Combined Section Meeting demonstrated 96% reduction in falls in patients with loss of protective sensation after receiving our recommended comprehensive neuropathy therapy program. In a study of 252 diabetic patients who have received a comprehensive Anodyne Therapy program, 78% reported reduction in the number of falls, 80% reported a reduced fear of falling, and more importantly 72% reported they were able to increase their activities and quality of life.
Are there any side effects or cautions?
There are no side effects or drug interactions that have been reported as long as Anodyne Therapy is properly used and monitored. This therapy is not allowed over or near the womb of a pregnant women, over an active malignancy or over topical creams like “Icy Hot”. If you have diabetes, check your blood sugars often because of your increased activity level from this program.
Will ongoing treatment be required?
Unfortunately, diabetes and most other causes of neuropathic pain are often chronic conditions. Our therapists recommend home exercises to help patients to continue to improve functionally. You also have the ability to continue Anodyne Therapy at home to maintain and continue to improve circulation in the extremities and to provide temporary pain relief. Relief can last up to 6 months without maintenance.
What is our comprehensive approach to caring for those with neuropathy?
Hands-On Physical Therapy first assesses the functional limitations you are experiencing and how it affects your life. A comprehensive therapy program is then designed to help you reach your personal goals. Our treatment plan usually involves 10 to 24 therapy sessions. Therapy may include any or all of the following interventions , depending on your particular needs:
