Multiple Concussions in Sports

Multiple Concussions in Sports

July 22, 2015

Concussions, a type of mild brain injury, are becoming more and more prevalent among athletes. In fact, studies now show that athletes with a history of three or more concussions are three times as likely to suffer a concussion during sport than those players with no history of concussion. In addition, athletes with multiple concussions are 30% more prone to suffer from delayed recovery, with symptoms that can last longer than one week. This leaves them more susceptible to post concussion syndrome which can last from three months to several years! It is important to keep in mind that most in-season repeat concussions occur within just ONE WEEK of the initial incident, proving how crucial rest and gradual progression back to sport are! Following proper protocols and guidelines is essential to prevent recurrent episodes, and to avoid the lasting effects of concussions. If you or someone you know have suffered a concussion, stop in to see us at Hands On Physical Therapy for the guidance you need to get you back to the sports you love!
