Did you know, a common misconception, is that little league elbow is the same injury that requires major league pitchers to get Tommy John surgery? Yet, it is actually an injury to the growth plate on the inside of the elbow, and affects pitchers between ages 9 and 14. Little league elbow is caused by repetitive overhead throwing, improper mechanics, throwing breaking pitches too young, throwing too many pitches, and lack of rest. By knowing the signs and symptoms, and proper training techniques, it is possible to shorten or completely prevent an episode. If you have questions about proper training techniques, or if someone you know is experiencing little league elbow, stop in to Hands On Physical Therapy.
